\"riskmanagementmini\"<\/a>Global risks are among the most dangerous an organisation can face, Airmic chief executive John Hurrell has warned.\u00a0 Writing in a report published by the Institute of Directors in co-operation with Airmic, he urges companies to take steps to increase their resilience and adaptability.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobal risks also offer opportunities for well-prepared businesses.\u00a0 The very fact that such risks are systemic means they are likely to affect your competitors as well as you, and then the most resilient companies will survive at the expense of the rest,\u201d\u00a0he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose seen to be part of the solution – delivering for customers, employees and other stakeholders despite challenges – stand to reap long-term reputational benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report, \u2018Responding to Global Risks: A practical guide for business leaders<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019, analyses the Global Risk Report published by the World Economic Forum earlier this year. It warns that business leaders are not doing enough to prepare for developments such as government debt crises, extreme weather events and social instability.<\/p>\n

In his contribution, Hurrell highlights some of the lessons from \u2018Roads to Resilience\u2019, the research published by Airmic and Cranfield School of Management in January, in particular the need to be adaptable and develop effective risk radar.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough these issues are for the board to address, risk managers have a key role to play in providing information, providing a catalyst for action and ensuring that the necessary controls are in place,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Other advice to companies:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Seek to understand the nature and extent of global risks.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Look at your organisation\u2019s critical dependencies, including people, physical assets, financial support, supply chains and technology, and assess major areas of vulnerability.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Adopt a strategic approach and appropriate operational tools to build resilience \u2013 from scenario planning and business continuity management to people policies \u2013 ensuring that robust measures are in place to manage and mitigate the impact of global risks.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Demonstrate leadership by: clearly taking board ownership of global risk oversight; adopting a strategic mindset that is open to opportunities as well as wise to threats; observing principles of sound governance and regulatory compliance; implementing appropriate internal structures and policies; and adhering to \u2013 and communicating \u2013 an ethical and sustainable approach.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the report, Dr Roger Barker, Director of Corporate Governance at the IoD, argues that too often companies focus narrowly on risks that affect their normal activities, and pay too little attention to global dangers, such as societal, geopolitical or environmental issues, which can have equally damaging consequences for the unprepared.<\/p>\n

The top ten global risks identified by the World Economic Forum are listed below.<\/p>\n

1. Fiscal crises in key economies<\/p>\n

2. Structurally high unemployment\/underemployment<\/p>\n

3. Water crises<\/p>\n

4. Severe income disparity<\/p>\n

5. Failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation<\/p>\n

6. Greater incidence of extreme weather events (e.g. floods, storms, fires)<\/p>\n

7. Global governance failure<\/p>\n

8. Food crises<\/p>\n

9. Failure of a major financial mechanism\/institution<\/p>\n

10. Profound political and social instability<\/p>\n
