{"id":2742,"date":"2013-05-17T11:16:58","date_gmt":"2013-05-17T10:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chaordicsolutions.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2742"},"modified":"2013-05-17T11:16:58","modified_gmt":"2013-05-17T10:16:58","slug":"using-hack-days-to-support-building-of-innovative-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chaordicsolutions.co.uk\/blog\/from-our-business-transformation-consultants\/using-hack-days-to-support-building-of-innovative-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Using hack days to support building of innovative culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chaordicsolutions.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/businesstransformationmini.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-37\" alt=\"businesstransformationmini\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chaordicsolutions.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/businesstransformationmini.jpg\" width=\"97\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a>Using hack days to support building of innovative culture: increasing creativity and passion outside day-to-day work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->Extract from NVIVO Blog &#8211; Adam Long:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>A hack day (also known as hackathon, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which those involved in software development collaborate intensively on software projects over 1 to 5 days to create new product innovation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Where does the idea come from?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Companies that run hack days include Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, NASA, and many more.\u00a0 I was convinced that we at QSR International should also be running hack days to empower our talented staff to create more inventions for our customers and employees.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>QSR International\u2019s company values are articulated as collaboration, innovation, and celebration.\u00a0 Our hack day goals supported our company values and were summarized as:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>&#8211; Collaborate<\/b> with Peers<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; <em><b>Innovate<\/b> the Platform, Product, or Process<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; <em><b>Celebrate<\/b> the Demonstration of Ideas<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Choosing a theme<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>We undertook our first hack day in October 2012 and set the theme \u2018Invent the Future\u2019 which was inspired from the quote \u2018the best way to predict the future is to invent it\u2019 by Alan Kay. Our second hack day was in March 2013 and set the theme \u2018Leadership through Innovation\u2019 which was inspired from the quote \u2018innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower\u2019 by Steve Jobs.\u00a0 We will continue doing more hacks days every six months.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/hack-days-creating-new-product-innovation\/hack_day_quote\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-559\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"hack_day_quote\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>What\u2019s involved in a hack day?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>In the lead up to the hack day we created a wiki based charter of ideas originating from customers that had not been explored.\u00a0 Participants were encouraged to choose one of these ideas or propose new ideas and seek out interested team members.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Our first hack day involved 37 employees working on 15 unique project ideas over 2 days.\u00a0 Given the success and interest in the first hack day, the second hack day involved 49 employees working on 17 unique project ideas over 2 days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Each day started with a stand-up meeting to describe each project idea and raise any assistance requests.\u00a0 On the afternoon of the second day an exhibit was held to demonstrate and celebrate each of the project ideas to the whole company.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/hack-days-creating-new-product-innovation\/hack_day_photos01\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-537\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Hack_Day_Photos01\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Hack_Day_Photos01.jpg\" width=\"364\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em><!--more--><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Quality and diversity \u2013 how do you judge the best hack?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We assembled a judging panel consisting of the CEO, CTO (that\u2019s me), Senior Project Manager, and an invited customer.\u00a0 This judging panel had the difficult task of choosing the \u2018most innovative\u2019 and \u2018most promising\u2019 project idea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Additionally, everyone in the company was given tokens to vote on the \u2018most popular\u2019 project idea.\u00a0 The quality and diversity of demonstrable project ideas was incredible and exceeded most expectations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Kevin Burfitt, our Senior Project Manager coordinated the hack days and when asked about his reflection on the hack days he had this to say:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cFor two days we remove all the normal reporting structures, meetings and red-tape and just let people concentrate on their own innovative ideas.\u00a0 Seeing the enthusiasm of so many people working together and bringing their hacks to life is inspiring.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/hack-days-creating-new-product-innovation\/hack_day_photos02\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"hack_day_photos02\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/hack_day_photos02.jpg\" width=\"363\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><\/em> <!--more--><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Turning hacks into real features: Community Feed and Geovisualization<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The NVivo 10 Service Pack 2 released in February 2013 included 2 hack day project ideas from the first hack day.\u00a0 The first was the <a href=\"http:\/\/help-nv10.qsrinternational.com\/desktop\/procedures\/stay_up_to_date_with_the_nvivo_community.htm?rhsearch=community%20feed\">Community Feed<\/a> which facilitated the ability to provide live news, tips, and video tutorials to users of NVivo within NVivo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/hack-days-creating-new-product-innovation\/hack_day_screenshots\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-517\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"hack_day_screenshots\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.qsrinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/hack_day_screenshots.jpg\" width=\"385\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><em>The second was <a href=\"http:\/\/help-nv10.qsrinternational.com\/desktop\/deep_concepts\/geovisualize_your_social_media_data.htm?rhsearch=geovisualize\">Geo-visualization<\/a> which facilitated geospatial visualization of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter data captured using NCapture (a browser add-in) for analysis within NVivo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Encouraging creativity and passion<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>We are proceeding with a half dozen hack day project ideas that will find their way into product releases and company process over the remainder of this year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hack days support building an innovative culture which allows experimentation, failure, and learning.\u00a0 It enables participants to express their creativity and passion outside their day to day work and drives increased innovation within the organization.\u00a0 The time constraint imposes the need for creative problem solving and early prioritization to ensure a demonstrable idea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To finish, I quote Thomas Edison, one of world\u2019s most prolific inventors in history:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe real measure of success is the
