It blamed flawed risk cultures for international scandals and disasters such as <\/em><em>Libor-fixing, Deepwater Horizon, Enron\u2019s collapse, the closure of the News of the <\/em><em>World and abuse of MPs expenses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAirline pilots are routinely given personality tests to determine how effectively they<\/em> <em>can exhibit self-control under stress \u2013 we should be ready to look at other key staff, <\/em><em>managers and board members in the same way\u201d, the guidance said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> The two documents, Risk culture: resources for practitioners, and Risk culture: under<\/em> <em>the microscope \u2013 guidance for boards, follow nine months of research and <\/em><em>consultation with international risk experts on the root causes of organisational <\/em><em>underperformance.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They offer guidance and resources to help organisations better understand cultural<\/em> <em>issues and move towards successful examples such as the John Lewis Partnership, <\/em><em>the Co-Op, UPS and Semco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In order to move from a vicious to virtuous cultural cycle, remuneration and risktaking<\/em> <em>should be linked, with those who take inappropriate risks being sanctioned and <\/em><em>those who choose smart risks rewarded.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHistorically, remuneration and risk management policies have not been aligned.
